Road to sociology watch

M. V. Lee Badgett, Christopher S. Carpenter and Dario Sansone report,

Public attitudes and policies toward LGBTQ individuals have improved substantially in recent decades. Economists are actively shaping the discourse around these policies and contributing to our understanding of the economic lives of LGBTQ individuals.

From the Journal of Economic Perspectives (an important mainstream journal), as reported by Timothy Taylor, the long-time managing editor.

Let’s be clear. The Democratic Party was once the home of economists who, while rather too confident in their technocratic skills for my taste, at least understood how to add, subtract, and distinguish demand from supply. They would not have embarked on the dangerous, inflation-stoking efforts of the current Administration.

But contemporary economists are thriving. They are contributing to the study of LGBTQ! And the status of women in the profession is now a major concern!

  1. Well if it’s any solace, the authors probably paid a submission fee. The AEA 2019 financial statement shows about $536,000 in submission fee revenue with total revenue at about $10.6 million.

But of course the authors themselves and their university employers are heavily publicly subsidized and one must really wonder why. If states were to auction off their universities, the only real value anyone would pay for would be the real estate. Economies are about resources flowing to their highest value use. A good pareto optimal move might just be such an auction.

    • Road to sociology in economics is one thing. But honestly, no one in their right mind is sitting around expecting the field to produce some efficacious new discovery that will make any sort of difference in the real world. It just isn’t going to happen.

But the hard sciences are another story. Road to sociology in the hard sciences represents a real opportunity cost. True to form, Biden is turning the National Science Foundation over to wokist aparatchick.
Heather McDonald has the details: https://www.city-journal.org/bidens-war-on-merit-puts-americas-scientific-edge-at-risk

All part of the grand scheme to launch Biden as the founder of a Kim Dynasty v. 2.0. The DC jails are filled with political prisoners. Pyongyang-on–the-Potomac is having the Postal Service conduct nationwide surveillance for compliance with Kim Il-Sung Biden’s version of Juche. The military ranks are being screened for.personal loyalty to Kim Il-Sung Biden. The spy agencies have but one mission: derailing any political opposition to Kim Il-Sung Biden. Even the Census has been corrupted to retain congressional seats for Kim Il-Sung Biden loyalists. A really ugly ending to a once great nation.

  2. The religion that persecutes heretics shoots down humor ad hoc (you simply can’t make jokes) but attacks seriousness in a sustained effort to drown out any complaints of the jettisoning of the methods, practices and assumptions that create seriousness.

  3. There aren’t that many LBGTQ people as a percentage of the population, and I’m pretty sure that most of their economic activity is substantially similar to everyone else’s. Even judging this charitably, I’m not really seeing the point.
