Aspen Summit on Inequality and Opportunity

The video is here. Pointer from Mark Thoma.

I cannot comment on the video, since I have not watched it yet. I was just amused by the concept of a conference in Aspen on inequality. Heaven forbid that they should hold their discussion in Ferguson, Missouri, or rural Ohio.

I’ve been to Aspen only once, also for a conference. I came away thinking that the best economic opportunity there is for a gigolo. I have never seen such a concentration of wealth, attractive, unattached older women.

  1. Unattached? Or are they just women who are shopping while their men are on the slopes or golf course?

  2. I had never been to Aspen until about four years ago. And largely shared your attitudes. Due to family attachments I now go there a couple times a year.

But Aspen is as almost every other community. There are people of every stripe. Some are more to ones liking than others. It is a really beautiful place in any case. Even if there are too many people with too much plastic surgery.

The TSA still exists, even in ASE. They have no problem humiliating older people with artificial joints.

  3. I have the same impression of geologists. Conferences are frequently held in places like Maui or the Grand Canyon. The geology underlying Camden, NJ, or Gary, IN, is likely an open area for research.

  4. How much does Aspen’s 8000 foot elevation degrade cognitive functioning?

An in-law of mine started a software company in Albuquerque (about 4500 feet). I asked him why he didn’t locate it in more attractive Santa Fe (7200 feet). He said programmers aren’t as smart at that altitude.

  5. Why would single, wealthy women be attracted to Aspen? There are other wealthy people around. Unlike Malibu, it isn’t a bedroom community, so an idle rich person is not an object of curiosity. The cost of housing is probably not that bad because housing is seasonal. She could even rent out for part of the ski season and go someplace sunny. There are always wealthy men visiting for conferences and vacations. Unlike a beach resort, there’s no reason to put on a swimsuit.
