I'm torn. The idea of shifting students all over the world between local dorms is actually something I've talked about for years, an opportunity opened up by primarily learning online. I hate the shitty lecture model that dominates universities today, so it's great that they share my disdain. :) And the notion of doing everything through software online is fantastic. But all this stuff about being "high touch," hiring professors and academics to teach, aiming to be a "tier-one research university" when that will hurt instruction far more than it will help, and finally simply awarding the standard degree credential, all this is just so backwards that I have to shake my head. Of course, no tenure, merit pay, and eschewing govt financial aid are great positives.

It's a mixed bag, putting them exactly where you called it, "in a sort of no-man’s land, in between the backward model of existing universities and some more radical model of self-directed education that will emerge over the next decade."
